BOSTON — The Red Sox recalled top pitching prospect Brayan Bello from Triple-A Worcester before their game against the Blue Jays on Friday here at Fenway Park.

Boston also selected infielder Yolmer Sánchez onto the 40-man roster and placed him on the active roster.

Connor Wong was optioned back to Worcester. Chris Sale was placed on the 15-day injured list.

Sale got hit in the hand with a line drive Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, breaking the pinky finger on his pitching hand.

The lefty underwent surgery (open reduction and internal fixation of a left fifth finger proximal phalanx fracture) Monday. The Red Sox are hopeful he will pitch again this season.

The Red Sox did not need to open a 40-man roster for Sánchez. The 40-man roster was at 39 players with Josh Winckowski on the COVID-related IL.

Sánchez has started one game for the Red Sox this season, going 0-for-1 with a walk June 28 at Toronto. He replaced Jarren Duran when the Red Sox played in Toronto in late June. Duran was ineligible for that series because he was unvaccinated.

Sánchez was batting .247 with a .378 on-base percentage, .413 slugging percentage, .791 OPS, nine homers, 12 doubles and one triple in 78 games at Worcester. He won an AL Gold Glove at second base with the White Sox in 2019.

Bello likely will start for the Red Sox on Sunday vs. the Blue Jays.
