The screw system was designed to address challenges associated with syndesmotic repair, which includes stable fixation while the syndesmosis heals, soft tissue irritation and screw fracture and removal of fractured implants. The system’s rigid design allows the syndesmosis to heal while its low-profile head reduces soft tissue irritation. Paragon 28 suggests that screw breakage is unpredictable, but the system was designed so that if there was a screw fractures, the screws would break cleanly in the clear space at the notch point.

Paragon 28’s Gorilla Breakaway Screw System features two notch lengths of 14 mm and 17 mm. The notches were designed to be placed in a clear space when used for syndesmosis repair.

When the doctor wants to remove the screw system, the tibial component of the screw can be removed medially or laterally with a dedicated removal instrumentation.
